Many of my favorite card designs are monochromatic. That means the design is primarily one color. Here are 2 monochromatic card design examples from the past.

What makes these designs so like-able?
Best things about monochromatic designs
- Easy – no worries about matching, or clashing, colors
- Calming – I think that every monochromatic design I ever saw made me feel calm inside
- Provides an easy background every time
- Makes it easy to add a pop of color
I love to work with a monochromatic design, just for these reasons. On the other hand, a monochromatic design can provide a starting point to a more complex design. In any case, I love a monochromatic design!
How do you pick the starting color?
So, how do you get started with a monochromatic design?
Well, if there’s a color traditionally associated with the occasion of your card, you can start with that. Valentine’s Day would be pink or red. St Patrick’s Day would be green. And so on.
Often, I start with the color most liked by the recipient. When I make a card for my son-in-law, I often start with a shade of dark green, because that’s his favorite. One of my daughters also gets green, while the other often receives blue.
Sometimes I start with Designer Series Paper, the patterned paper that Stampin’ Up! sells, and pick a color from a sheet in the pack.
Sometimes I start with a color I have lots of. That’s typically shades of orange, a color I’m not so crazy over lol.
Most often, however, I start with my mood of the day. Hmmm, today I feel like shades of green-blue!
The idea is just pick a color and begin. If it doesn’t work out for you, scrap it and start over! There are no hard-and-fast rules.
