Tip for Using your Big Shot

I use my Big Shot a lot. It's such a handy tool, that I can't even remember what it's like to not have the Big Shot in my craft room. I love that I can cut shapes to easily. I especially love that I can dry emboss my card stock. And most of all, I love that I can do both of these things at the same time!

But sometimes, the Big Shot may not perform as well as you think it should. The most common issue is that the dies don't cut through the card stock all the way, or the embossing folders are not deep enough. This is not as serious a problem as you would expect. To fix it, place a shim under the bottom of the sandwich you are using. A shim is a piece of card stock. That's all. Pretty simple.

Basically, the Big Shot (#113439) is a mechanical device. By turning the handle, you are actually turning two stainless steel cylinders. As you pass the "sandwich" through the machine, the blades of the dies and the shapes of the embossing dies dig into the card stock. If the machine was manufactured with a slightly bigger gap between the rollers, the digging may not be deep enough. So, the shim adds the extra depth. If it's not enough, use thicker card stock or add another layer to the shim.

Love, love, love the Big Shot! Dry embossing is one of my very favorite things to do. It creates a look that just isn’t possible any other way and you always get a “wow” effect. The cutting dies are fun too — love the butterflies and daisies!!
