When I stamp, I always try to ensure that the card design has dimension to it – layers and depth. Today, I’m, exploring some ways to achieve that! Here is a card with dimensional flowers.
How to Add Dimension to Your Design
- Cut out stamped shapes – Every stamped image on this card is cut out using a handheld punch. There are also a TON of dies that you can use to cut out stamped images. In my design, no image is stamped directly on the card front. Even the sentiment is punched out!
- Add 3-D embellishments – Check out the centers of the Balmy Blue flowers. Each has a Pearl Basic Jewel. Not only do these stand out, but they add a touch of elegance in a way that no other jewel can!
- Use Stampin’ Dimensionals – I inserted a Stampin’ Dimensional, also referred to as foam adhesive, under each layer of petals. So the flowers stand out from the card front. They also have depth to their structure!
- Sponge shapes – I sponged the edges of the Tailored Tag Punch shape used for the sentiment, giving it a 3 dimensional look.
The last 2 suggestions are the easiest to execute! But even the the first two are super easy!
About sponging… I had considered sponging some of the Whisper White layer of the card front, to add some shading and dimension. At the end, I did not. I wanted some white space so that your eye found a place to rest while examining the card. The white space also allowed the sentiment and the flowers to be focal points in the design. Nothing made them fad into the background.
Another Dimensional Card Design Consideration
This is one of my favorites!
Did you notice that the flowers and leaves extend beyond the borders of the top layer of the card front? I love to do this! Again, a simple way to add dimension, as long as you’re cutting out the stamped images.
A word of caution: Some card makers like to extend shapes beyond the borders of the actual, full card front. I don’t ever do this, as the card will no longer fit in the envelope! And folding the cut-out shapes is simply not an option for me!
Other Examples of Adding Dimension
I’ve used some of these techniques many times. Here’s an example, which also happens to be one of my most pinned cards on Pinterest! Click here.
Here is yet another project – it uses a type of ribbon. Click here.
The Next Steps
Try using more depth in your next card design. Since most of us have a flower stamp or 2 (or 3 or 10!) try using flowers on your dimensional card design. Then leave me a comment, showing me what you did. I’d love to see what you discovered on your creative journey!
