Today, I was given a challenge to describe what I love about being an independent Stampin' Up! demonstrator.
That took me by surprise. It's something I thought about often while deciding if I should sign up. I thought about it when I chose to ramp up my business. But I haven't thought about it much since then. Until today.
I love having frequent opportunities to be creative. When I was a hobby stamper and scrapbooker, I spent a little time working at it. But now that I'm a demonstrator, I'm able to devote more time to paper crafts and more often. In fact, I complete projects every week! I admit that in the beginning, it could be difficult to be creative so often. But, like any other skills and talents, the more you use it, the better you become. I rarely spend time designing cards that make their way quickly to the trash. Almost all of what I create is good enough to share.
I love being an independent demonstrator. Being an employee of a business could be more "secure". And the job responsibilities would be clearly defined for me. However, you can't choose your hours, your vacation time, your boss, your coworkers, etc. While I work hard at my business, I can choose the hours I work, so that they fit with my family and other community commitments. Plus, I'm able to choose how I want that business to look. I love to hold classes and give several every month. Some demonstrators don't do this at all. How I choose to run my business depends on my skills, personality, and what makes good business sense. I love this freedom!
I love having frequent opportunities to meet other people. Really, I'm very shy. But put some ink and cardstock in front of me, and I can talk for ever! I enjoy both home workshops and my classes, because I get to spend time with so many different people. Until last year, it seemed that I only met other mothers who had children in the same activities as my children. Most were very nice, but now that my children are grown, I no longer see any of them. But through Stampin' Up! I've met so many wonderful people – uplines, side lines, and customers. I've laughed with so many of them. And some have even become special friends. That is the best part of all.
Now, notice that I never mentioned money. Yes, I enjoy making money to pay for my stamping habit. And I especially love the discounts, and sneak peaks and special events. However, for me, the money isn't the part I love most. Funny. I run this business as a business. But it's the non-business aspects that I love the most.
