I’m always looking for new ways to send a fun card that says Hello. I think today I nailed it!
How I designed this card
Today’s creative journey started with the Designer Series Paper. This sheet is one from the Playing with Patterns 6″ x 6″ Designer Series Paper (DSP). I LOVE this paper. In fact, I used it as part of my online card class in January. The patterns on these sheets are pure fun – stripes and polka dots – in a set of bright (but not overly bright) fun shades. Blue and yellow has always been a favorite combination of mine. It’s no wonder that I love this particular sheet!
After I selected the paper, I thought about Seaside Spray. This soft blue will be retiring with the current annual catalog on May 3. This color made it to many of my winter card designs. And while it’s not on the DSP I chose today, it works well with it. I’m going to miss Seaside Spray. Expect to see it on lots of my creations between now and May 3.
So those 2 items together gave me my starting point for design.
The 4-1-1
- Turn the paper on an angle – The stripes on this Designer Series Paper definitely go straight up-and-down or straight side-to-side. But I turned it on a slight angle. Don’t you think it’s interesting? And definitely fun!
- Raise elements – allow some elements of the card to sit higher than others. I added 3 Metallic Pearls to the top right corner. Beside being the perfect color for this card, they are slightly raised and shiny! I also popped up the stamped circle and the matted sentiment with Stampin’ Dimensionals. It’s always much more interesting to have elements at different heights on your card front
- Add texture – Did you notice that there are 2 Night of Navy stripes on the card front? They are not part of the DSP. Rather, they are strands of 1/8″ ribbon, part of the Playing with Patterns Ribbon Combo Pack. They add a subtle POP to the design!
What to do next?
Try making a card like this. Not exactly like this. It doesn’t even need to be a fun card that says Hello.
Simply pick a piece of Designer Series Paper. Then pick a color of cardstock that you like. Then go from there. It’s easier than you think!
Any questions? Feel free to reach out to me and I’ll answer them. And feel free to send me a photo of your creation. I’d love to see it!
