Crafting Remains Strong, even During Recession

Did you realize that crafting is considered to be recession-proof? During tight financial times, many people feel that a small, home-made gift is worth much more than an expensive, impersonal, store-bought item. I've always felt that way. I guess it's why I became interested in card making and scrapbooking in the first place!

The Craft and Hobby Association (CHA) recently published a study about current spending habits of crafters in the United States. More than half the household in the country have completed at least one craft project in the past year. Amazing. Sales for the hobby and craft industry exceed $27 billion dollars annually for the past three years. Really amazing!

And, by the way, scrapbooking and memory crafts are still the top craft in the country.

Why do people craft? Contrary to what many of you may think, saving money is not the top reason. The number one reason is for a sense of accomplishment. I know that whenever I finish a card or scrapbook page of which I'm especially proud, I love to show it to my family for their feedback. And if I really like the finished product, I publish it on my blog! The second reason for crafting is for relaxation. I agree with that one, too. I love the time I spend in my craft room. It gives me the peace of mind to face all the other stresses of daily life. And number three reason is the memory keeping. Why else would you make a scrapbook? The only thing I enjoy more than working on a scrapbook page, is looking at my finished scrapbook pages!

I craft; therefore, I am! Or is it the other way ’round? Either way, it’s just plain fun. My card stamping makes me feel really good because not only am I feeling good about creating something unique, I’m creating something unique FOR somebody else! A hobby that encourages thought and expression beyond the end of one’s own nose is a very good thing.
